Random Ambivalent Thoughts About Opposing The War

Wednesday February 22, 2006, Buzz Fugazi

I came out against the war before the invasion and I spent two years working virtually around the clock as, for lack of a better term, an anti-Bush activist. But even then, I suffered from a profound ambivalence that has only grown stronger. Christianity emerged in the Middle East. Its presence in the region pre-dates the existence of Islam. Despite the growth of European Christian power over the centuries, the original Christian communities in that region have spent modern existence under the domination of Islam and have been subjected to repeated massacres. Remember Hitler's famous remark: Who remembers the Armenians?

Most of you probably don't know what I'm talking about. Congrats on proving Hitler correct in that regard. Now, thanks to a radical faction of Islam, Christianity is in danger of being wiped out of the region. I am disturbed that some of these same Church groups that blame Israel for the plight of Christianity in the region are oblivious to the massacres and the fact that the same elements behind the insurgency are bombing churches of Christians who trace their presence in the region to the time of Christ... the original Christians. Why aren't these church groups concerned with those Christians? Why is it OK for some Islamic groups to the say the Middle East belongs only to Islam, when Jews and Christians existed in the region before there was a such thing as Islam? Why is it that the same people who criticize Israel for unfair policies are silent when it comes to the way the Iranian and Syrian governments treat Muslims who want to live in peace with Christians and Jews? Why should we surrender an entire region to elements who openly refer to the United States as "The Great Satan" and hold Death To America rallies in the street, just as they did when the Ayatolla first took over? Am I saying war is the answer? No, but until I get a death sentence from Bush for lampooning him, I don't think he belongs quite in the same category as the shit head President of Iran... Bush is no Hitler. But many in the Peace Movement are very much like those who wanted to appease Hitler and let him reek havoc throughout Europe before the Democratic nations of the world acted on what he said he would do all along. You want to give Iraq to the people who are organizing these insane rallies against Danish cartoons? You think you have the best interests of the Iraqi people at heart? You think most Muslims want to live in a theocracy that allows no personal dissent and no freedom of conscience? Ever talk to any Iraqis about their desire for democracy? You don't get peace by letting someone take away your freedom to speak openly and practice the religion of your own conscience. Like we used to say, No Justice No Peace... you need the political institutions we take for granted to have a chance at Peace. You want WMD? Iran will show you some WMD. We're in it. We were in it a long time ago.

There's no turning back, people. No chance to pull out and make it all go away. Not a fucking chance. Be real. You can't have peace with someone who doesn't think you have the right to exist.
